Even if you were not approved for a federal tax extension, the State of Michigan will still grant you a six-month tax extension. If need to make a state tax payment, you'll need to submit Michigan Form 4 (PDF). Attach a copy of your extension form when you file your state tax return.

Filing for a Michigan tax extension will not grant you extra time to pay any tax balance due. Your balance must be paid by April 15 to avoid possible penalties.

If you already received an approval notification from ExpressExtension, and you don't need to make a tax payment, then you're all done.

Michigan Business Tax filers must file Form 4 (PDF) to request an extension and must file it even if the Internal Revenue Service has approved a federal extension (Form 7004). If Form 4 is properly prepared meeting all listed conditions and filed timely, Michigan Department of Treasury will grant the taxpayer an extension to the last day of the eighth month beyond the original due date regardless of whether you are granted a federal extension. Do not send a copy of the federal extension to the Michigan Department of Treasury. Retain a copy for your records.

Filing for a Michigan tax extension will not provide you with additional time to pay any tax balance due, which must be paid by your original filing deadline or interest and other payment penalties may apply.
